Since you are going to do all the pushing yourself you need strong sustain. Start with Chronos' Pendant II and two health potions and head to mid lane. If you have a jungler on your team head to his starting camp to leach exp before minions reach lane. However, if it turns into a team fight call "retreat" and head to your lane directly. You don't want to miss out on farming.
Being together with an ally takes the focus from you and allows you to be more passive or aggressive. You can start with either Boots of the Magi I + Meditation and proceed with Warlock's Sash, or start with Doom Orb II for maximum snowball effect. Help your lane partner to protect his jungle camp if he bought Hand of the Gods or just head to lane.
Push and poke at the same time using your Tornadoes. As long as the enemy minion wave pass through it you will deal enough damage to them so try to place it where the enemy gets hit too. Either right in front of him so he walks into it, or on top of him. Try to place it on either left or right side of the lane to block him from going around it easily. If you get a chance, go into the jungle and drop your ultimate onto him, it may surprise him and throw him off guard. If he stands close to a wall, try to place it on top of an incoming enemy minion wave. Often it will confuse him and in an attempt to dodge it he will run back to the middle of the lane and get hit. If not, at least you cleared a minion wave.
Ao Kuang is very good at dancing with multiple enemies and if you find yourself in a tough spot you should rather try to fight back than run away. Often the enemy will find that chasing an Ao Kuang is very painful and leave you alone. There are many tactics to use when fighting solo as an Ao Kuang.
Use it to slow enemies before you change direction. It can also help you to land your ultimate.
It scales with number of enemies nearby so use it to it's fullest. If you are getting ganked by two enemies then make sure all three enemies are close to you before you use it. When combined with Heavenly Agility or Creeping Curses it goes from a weak speed bonus to a strong escape tool.
This ability applies the best damage over time in Smite so make sure you use it to it's fullest. Place it on a jungle entrance and walk through it. If the enemy choose to follow you, walk back into lane and force them to walk through it again. If you have built Gem of Isolation already you can use it in combo with Squall and it should slow them down enough for you to land your ultimate and escape an otherwise certain death.
Spirit's of Tempest
When you combine longest range, widest area and biggest damage something good will come out of it. In this case, Ao Kuang's ultimate. You can use this ability in so many ways, but it will be most useful when combined with a stun or in a jungle fight. If you need to get away, drop it in front of you as you head into the jungle, as most enemies will fail to notice it in time. Follow up with Squall and Tornadoes and you got yourself a kill right there. It can travel through walls which makes it an awesome ability to ninja steal Fire Giant or Gold Fury while scoring a kill, or kill an enemy on low health while recalling.
Even though Ao Kuang brings very little to the table in terms of team utility, he is still a great team fighter. Why? He is simply the one who deals the damage. His abilitys excells when used in combination with slows and stuns and he can wipe out an entire enemy team if played with good team mates. Using his abilities combined with Polynomicon can come in just in time to save an ally on low health, taking his foe from full to zero health in a split second while leaving him with no possibility to at least bring your ally with him as your ultimate knocks him into the air.
Polynomicon can be used to push towers which makes Ao Kuang an excellent ninja pusher. However, I advice you not to, unless nessary. There are many gods who push better than you and being the main damage dealer you need to always be ready for your team.
Solo Gold Fury
With around 4 to 5 items of the core item build and level 20 you can solo Gold Fury, using all 3 abilities to activate Polynomicon whenever possible. Preferable, you have a tank though, as it will make you less wounderable to ganks from enemy teams. Always have Gold Fury warded whenever it's up and especially when you are going to kill it.
